Branson announces clean energy investment plan
Richard Branson, billionaire founder and chairman of Virgin Group Ltd., plans to invest “quite heavily” in the establishment of a clean energy company in China. China became the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases after passing the US last year, and Branson’s group operates other clean energy companies in Europe and the US. "I think the tiger could have grabbed onto something, maybe a ledge," Mollinedo said. "She had to jump. How she was able to jump so high is amazing to me, but she's an exotic animal." Mollinedo also said the dry moat between the wall and the tiger exhibit is 33 feet, not 20 feet as originally reported. The wall, he said, is 12 and a half feet, not 18 feet. The exhibit was built in 1940, he said.

The Concept of a Carbon Footprint

indyA carbon footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.  It is useful for individuals and organizations to conceptualize their impact in contributing to global warming.

A conceptual tool in response to carbon footprints are carbon offsets, or the mitigation of carbon emissions through the development of alternative projects such as solar or wind energy or reforestation.
And in other news
imageInstalling a solar water heating system on an average 2 bedroom home can save 500kg of carbon dioxide every year. This is reducing the average person's carbon footprint by nearly 20%.
imageGlobal investments of $15 trillion to $20 trillion over the next 20 to 25 years may be required “to place the world on a markedly different and sustainable energy trajectory” according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Did You Know?

In 2002, coal, oil and gas released  23 gigatons (billion tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere.  The Oceans absorb about 2 gigatons of CO2 annually.

Energy News

Today we are using, on average, four times more energy than our forebears did 100 years ago. Our consumptive use of fossil fuel has increased 16 fold over that same period.
