The Concept of a Carbon Footprint A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. It is useful for individuals and organizations to conceptualize their impact in contributing to global warming. A conceptual tool in response to carbon footprints are carbon offsets, or the mitigation of carbon emissions through the development of alternative projects such as solar or wind energy or reforestation.
 Installing a solar water heating system on an average 2 bedroom home can save 500kg of carbon dioxide every year. This is reducing the average person's carbon footprint by nearly 20%.
 Global investments of $15 trillion to $20 trillion over the next 20 to 25 years may be required “to place the world on a markedly different and sustainable energy trajectory” according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
